Family Together – Helping Families Stay Safe and Connected

What is Family Together?

Families Together is a family preservation program that supports children to remain safely at home with their families. The program aims to prevent children from entering out-of-home care (OOHC) and reduce future involvement with the child protection system. It is part of the Family Preservation program funded by the NSW Government .

Through tailored support, parents and families build the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide safe, nurturing care for their children. Families strengthen relationships, improve everyday family functioning, develop resilience, and increase their confidence in making decisions and achieving their goals.

Families are also connected with health, housing and community services to help meet their practical needs and create a safe, stable and supportive home environment where children and young people can thrive.

Who is it for?

  • Families with children and young people aged 0–17 years who are at risk of significant harm (ROSH) or where there are child protection concerns, as defined under Section 23 of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.
  • Families who have experienced, or are at risk of, a child entering out-of-home care.
  • Aboriginal children, families and communities through culturally safe, trauma-informed and family-centred support.
  • We accept referrals from the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ) as well as community referrals.

What support is available?

We offer:
Families Together provides practical, therapeutic and culturally responsive support, including:

  • Dedicated caseworker support and case coordination tailored to each family's strengths and needs.
  • Intensive in-home support, parenting guidance, practical assistance and skill development.
  • Therapeutic support and counselling to strengthen family wellbeing.
  • Advocacy to help families access services and have their voices heard.

We provide intensive, culturally led support to Aboriginal families where there is significant child protection concerns but it is safe for children to remain at home with intensive intervention.

Support is flexible and continues for as long as it is needed.

Why is this program important?

Families Together helps keep Aboriginal children safely connected to their families, culture, communities and Country while reducing the need for children to enter out-of-home care.

The program recognises that when families receive the right support early, children are more likely to remain safe, healthy and connected. By working alongside families, we help build stability, reduce child protection concerns and strengthen family wellbeing.

Our approach is guided by the following principles:

  • Build safety and trust
  • Strengthen families
  • Help children feel secure and supported.
